· What are the symptoms of high cholesterol in the blood?
High cholesterol is also known as hypercholesterolemia, is a silent disease. There are no symptoms until complications have already developed. Such as the chest pain of a heart attack or calf pain during walking, caused by narrowed or blocked arteries of the legs. 

· How is high cholesterol diagnosed?
High cholesterol is diagnosed through blood tests. These lab tests usually measure the total cholesterol level in the blood including levels of LDL, HDL, and triglyceride in the blood. The patient will need to fast for twelve hours before a blood test.

· How is high cholesterol treated?
Ayurol in combination with Ayulite along with a diet high in soluble fibre and low in total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol can help to lower cholesterol levels.


· What is a healthy diet?
· Increase the soluble fibre in the diet by eating fruits and vegetables including 

  whole grains. Choose poultry, fish or meatless entrees more often than you 

  choose red meats.
· Remove the skin before cooking chicken or turkey.
· Use lean cuts of meat and trim all visible fat.
· Limit the amounts of nuts you eat, specially nuts high in saturated fat 

  namely cashew nuts, pistachios and macadamias.
· Replace saturated fats in the diet with moderate amounts of non-saturated 

  and polyunsaturated fats. e.g. limit use of butter, margarine, cheeses,  

  shortening, coconut and palm oils. Use sunflowers, safflowers, soya bean, 

  canola or olive oil etc., which are high in monounsaturated and 

  polyunsaturated fats.

· Replace whole milk dairy products with nonfat or low fat milk, cheese or 

  yoghurt. 
· Avoid eggs. Use egg substitutes. 
· Avoid fatty deserts including ice creams, cream filled cakes, cheese cakes 

  etc..
· Choose fresh fruits, nonfat frozen yoghurt etc..
· Reduce fried foods and fast foods.
· Lose weight if you are over weight.
· Exercise as approved by the doctor.

· How to avoid hypercholesterolemia?
In addition to changing the diet, you can help lower the cholesterol by:
· Not smoking.
· Maintaining normal weight.
· Exercising daily, under doctor’s advice.
· Exercise helps raise HDL levels, improves circulation, decreases body fat 

  and tones muscles. 

· How to increase HDL and decrease LDL?
HDL can be increased by consuming oils that are beneficial and rich in omega-3 fatty acid found in walnuts, soya beans, fish like mackerel, tuna etc. olive oil, flax seed oil, canola oil, garlic and onions. Almonds, whole pulses, fruits like apples, oranges and vegetables like capsicum, broccoli and leafy vegetables also help raise HDL levels. Olives and avocados contain beneficial monosaturated fatty acids which help increase the good cholesterol. Wine drinkers stand at an advantage because drinking one glass of red wine a day helps raise HDL levels. 

You can reduce LDL levels by reducing your intake of saturated fats found in milk, cheese, chicken skin, red meat, processed foods made from refined flour and junk food. Use oils rich in monosaturated fatty acids such as olive oil, canola oil, ground nut flaxseed oil, mustard oil etc..

Take vitamin E supplements, as it prevents oxidation of LDL. Eat foods rich in soluble fibre as in oat bran and whole pulses like beans, gram etc., to reduce total cholesterol. 

 

Cholesterol Myths: It is a misconception that cholesterol occurs only in old people who are fat or obese. In reality, cholesterol is also found in people below 40 years of age with high disposable incomes and a sedentary lifestyle.
