Welex started from rather humble beginnings. A manually operated hand-compression machine was a vital machinery component of the company during those early days. Several cranks with the hand were needed to process herbal mixtures into single capsules. Always a fire with curiosity Dr. Y. C. Bhatt worked long hours, hand sorting, mixing and packing sufficient capsules for sale, retiring to bed everyday only in the early hours of the morning.

Since those humble beginnings Welex has grown into a multi faceted herbal supplements company, with more than one million consumers and over five sole-selling distributors around the world. Welex has made its presence felt in more than eight countries, making a strong impact on its distributors and consumers. The company has specialised in Ayurvedic herbal formulations. Through extensive research and trials over the years, Welex Laboratories has excelled in the treatment of chronic ailments that afflict communities’ world wide. The company has perfected over 16 herbal supplements to aid the world community in health maintenance.

Welex not only researches extensively but also has the facilities to manufacture them. In this manner they are able to monitor the quality and provide the best input in terms of expertise. Welex's owner and son of the late Dr. Y. C. Bhatt, Dr. Roopam Bhatt personally oversees every aspect of product development. Welex believes that each and every person on this earth deserves to lead a healthy life. And it is committed to achieve that end.

Since the birth of the company, the Bhatts have not wavered in their resolve to maintain product quality, ensure exclusivity and support of all their partners.

Unique to Welex is its control of its products from concept to manufacturing and packaging. And given its commitment to quality and excellence, Welex continues to grow in response to the needs of its partners, clients and consumers the world over.

Manufacturing:
Welex controls its entire production process; its products are incomparable in their exclusivity, quality and the conditions under which they are manufactured. Welex's manufacturing facility at Tarapore is one of a kind. The facility is continually being upgraded with high-tech equipment that is customised to suit Welex's needs and specifications. The packaging procedure is also state-of-the-art, and maintains the quality standards while also being totally Eco-friendly by producing only bio-degradable packaging for all of Welex’s products.

A well-equipped laboratory at Tarapore undertakes R & D to ensure up-to-date development of Ayurvedic products (herbal supplements). The facility also features a unique, purified airflow system. Strict control ensures the best available quality.
Welex charts the growth of over a hundred varieties of herbs, undertaken through independent growers from seeds to germination to mature plants. Close attention to the development of herbs ensures the highest quality plants grown under strictly controlled conditions.

The company is maintaining strict parameters for the detection of superior grade of medicinal herbs and their extracts, which are used in the formulations. Each herb is evaluated for optimum picking. The effects of humidity, climate, seasonal changes, soil, sunlight and methods of cultivation are carefully monitored and controlled. Welex's roving field specialists conduct extensive research, sourcing new and improved varieties and strains of herbs to be used in formulations and researching those parts of the plants that are most beneficial for the manufacture; only those parts are ultimately used in the formulations. Herbs are grown by Welex approved vendors in special greenhouses and outdoors.

The physical characteristics of the herbs received are compared and matched for acceptability with the approved standards and representative samples before processing. The herbs are also checked for any foreign organic matter and organs other than those named in the definition and description. Further, foreign particles not coming from the source of plant and moulds and animal contaminants are carefully checked, and unwanted material removed.

The accepted herbs are then processed for grinding and pulverising. The grinding activity is carried out on well-maintained equipment and utmost care is taken to avoid any contamination. Fine grinding is carried out at controlled temperatures to preserve the medicinal value of the herbs.

The grounded herbs are then further sifted through stainless steel sieve of required size in airtight containers at controlled temperatures and atmospheric conditions. Fumigation is also carried out to reduce the bio burden (microbial count).

Extracts are processed under specifications from standard manufacturers. For acceptability of the extracts actual results are compared with the standard. All accepted herb extracts are stored at controlled temperature and if desired they are further dried under controlled hygienic conditions.

For formulating a product the required quantity of grounded herbs and extracts are weighed, dried, blended at controlled room temperatures and humidity. They are monitored at regular intervals. This ensures uniform distribution of herbs and extracts in a blend. The process does not end there. The blend is then further fumigated for sterilisation to reduce bio burden.

The formulated blend then enters into the capsule filling process. The formulated blend is encapsulated in clear transparent capsules on automatic capsule filling machines. The capsule filling starts after the process is qualified within specific parameters for instance, room temperature, humidity, average

mass variation, weight, and disintegration time during ingestion.

Throughout the entire process these parameters are maintained and monitored at regular intervals. Filled capsules are sorted and inspected for any rejection on a sorting machine. They are polished to remove adhered powder and dust particles in a polishing machine. Sorted and cleaned capsules are ready for packing.

Welex's products are blister packed. The blister packing is carried out according to specific parameters, which are strictly maintained throughout the packing process.

The blistered packs are visually inspected and packed in the desired pack size. The packing process is monitored by inspecting 10% of the batch-size for the blister quality, batch marking and labelling.

he final analysis of Welex herbal formulations are carried out in reputed, independent, Government (FDA) approved testing laboratories and only when these are approved are the batches allowed for dispatch.

To further ensure GMP standards are maintained the manufacturing area is daily fumigated to reduce bacterial count and ensure good atmospheric conditions for manufacturing the  herbal  products.

Raw herbs are shipped to Welex’s plant at Tarapore to be stored and processed. Welex prepares special formulations and supplements that are shipped all over the world. The packing ensures no loss when the products are in transit from Tarapore.

The dedication and expertise of the Welex team, combined with their proficiency in this exceptionally complex field of natural healing make Welex Ayurvedic supplements incomparable in term of its efficacy. This in turn enables them to achieve high penetration and wide acceptance wherever they are introduced in the world market.

Over a period of just 15 months, Welex has exhibited phenomenal growth in sales in Malaysia. Sales in America and Western Europe are also showing signs of growth.  Welex's expertise lies in balancing of the formulations according to the ancient principles of medicine, resulting in Welex's Ayurvedic products (herbal supplements) working safely, surely and efficiently.

Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)

This is used as an acronym for an increasingly popular concept in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. GMP at Welex means much more than 'Good Manufacturing Practice' alone it means the pursuit of excellence. It is not restricted to manufacturing and the factory floor alone. It extends to the entire process, from manufacturing to shipping to providing the individual customer the best that Ayurvedic medicine has to offer. From the basic raw material to the quality end product GMP is interrelated closely and practised by every employee.

At Welex GMP includes:

  • Facilities: Layout and construction of the plant, lighting, ventilation, air filtration, air heating and cooling, plumbing sewage and refuse, sanitation, washing and toilet facilities.

  • Herbal formulation development: Pre-formulation, herbal stability evaluation, detailed specifications of various inputs like raw materials and packing materials.

  • Vendor selection and development.

  • Good warehouse management practices.

  • Good production management practices: Selection and validation of equipment, detailed documentation and preparation of standard operating procedures.

  • Good maintenance practices: Proper layout of equipment, spares maintenance, equipment maintenance and preventive maintenance.

  • Good control laboratory practices: Analysis and testing procedures, standardisation and sampling plans, etc.

  • Good distribution practices: Proper storage conditions and appropriate transportation.

GMP is not the responsibility of a manufacturing or production department alone. GMP is really a corporate responsibility and reflects a company's commitment to quality. It therefore requires the cooperation and support of almost all the functional departments within the organisation. It calls for a high degree of      co-ordination between the various depart-ments of the organisation.

Investment:
Welex, like any progressive, forward looking company, has been investing in technology and modernisation of its manufacturing facilities. The company has embarked on a phased expansion programme involving modernisation of its manufacturing `facilities to broaden its herbal formulations and integrate its production. The modernisation and expansion is with a view to tap further the expanding overseas market, which has vast potential.

The first phase of the programme involved civil work, electrification, and purchase of new machines for blister packing (from Pampack), grinding and pulverising, and drying under controlled conditions. To fully integrate the production plans, two automatic material flow, data compiling and process monitoring systems are being planned. A pilot scale automatic, continuous system is being planned on the drawing board to replace the existing batch system. The pilot plan is also being planned to provide total quality control and assurance.

Computer controlled monitoring devices are being experimented upon by independent authorities and pioneers in the field.

Engineering aspects of automated control features are being studied. A simulation model and computer program is evaluating the process with respect to processing time and processing technique. Experiments comparing different levels of specific input variables will be determined and cost-benefit analysis to processing methodologies will be compared.
